When I was asked to represent GreekYearbook at Sigma Chi’s Fraternity convention last summer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Being new to Greek life, I didn’t even know that Sororities and Fraternities had conventions; I certainly didn’t know what each one involved.
The convention was in Washington D.C. and when my colleague and I arrived we walked into a gorgeous hotel in the middle of Chinatown. The convention was in the hotel, which made it that much more convenient for us to set up. We were one of about ten vendors to set up where people were selling a variety of products – Sigma Chi ties, picture frames, coasters, pins, water bottles, t-shirts, you name it! Once we set up we waited for all of the guys to walk by and visit our booth. We were set up outside of the conference rooms, so after various information sessions they had time to peruse the vendor area. I had a great time talking to everyone and it was fascinating to hear where everyone was from, what schools they go to/went to, and to answer their questions that they had about our products and services. Most of the guys hadn’t been to D.C. before either, so that was fun talking about what they were excited to see and do while they were there.
It was a really interesting experience. I had no idea how important a convention can be to present and past members. It made me realize that once you join a Fraternity or Sorority, you really are a member for life.
